Trump Threatens to ‘Take Over’ Iran if Tehran Closes Strait of Hormuz

US President escalates rhetoric amid fragile US-Iran talks in Switzerland, warning of severe consequences for any disruption to the vital oil chokepoint.

US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening to “take over” the country if it closes the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments.

In a profanity-laced tirade reported by multiple outlets, Trump told Iranian officials that closing the strait would mean “you won’t have a country” and that they “won’t even make it back to your f***ing country.” He further suggested the United States could seize control of the strategic passage and impose tolls if a final deal is not reached.

Trump Draws Red Line on Hormuz Strait:

The remarks come as US and Iranian delegations engage in high-stakes negotiations in Switzerland, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan. Vice President JD Vance is leading the US side, with mediators reporting “encouraging progress” despite the heated exchange.

Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz-through which about 20% of global oil passes-in response to recent Israeli strikes and perceived ceasefire violations. Trump’s comments underscore Washington’s determination to keep the waterway open, describing the US as a potential “Guardian Angel” of the region.

Hormuz Standoff Fuels Global Anxiety:

The Strait of Hormuz has long been a flashpoint. Any prolonged closure could spike global energy prices and destabilise markets. Trump has also warned of renewed, even harsher military strikes if Iran disrupts oil flows.

While some shipping continues, concerns remain high. Analysts note the rhetoric contrasts with diplomatic efforts but reflects Trump’s hardline stance on Iran.

The talks cover nuclear issues, regional tensions, and a potential 60-day framework. Iranian officials walked out temporarily over Trump’s comments, but backchannel mediation continues.
