At least 16 killed and dozens injured as residential buildings, children’s hospital and school damaged in overnight assault.
A massive Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region has killed at least 16 people and injured more than 40, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday, in what authorities described as one of the most intense aerial assaults on the capital since the start of the full-scale invasion.
The overnight barrage, which began around midnight and continued into the morning of 20 August, involved dozens of ballistic, cruise and hypersonic missiles alongside 168 drones, according to Ukraine’s air force. Most cruise missiles and nearly 90 percent of the drones were intercepted, but an unspecified number of ballistic missiles reached their targets. Strikes hit residential areas, a children’s medical centre, a school and other civilian infrastructure.
Deadly Russian Strikes Kill 16 in Kyiv Region:
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 15 people died in the capital, with the majority of fatalities in the Solomianskyi district, where the upper floors of a nine-storey residential block were destroyed. A further death was reported in the wider Kyiv region. Klitschko declared Friday a day of mourning in the city. Emergency services continued search-and-rescue operations at multiple sites as residents emerged from shelters.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the assault “massive” and “one of the most cynical, calculated and large-scale” of the war. “The Russians had been preparing for a long time, combining different types of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones, aiming to cause as much damage as possible to civilian infrastructure,” he said. Zelenskyy noted that 30 residential buildings, a school, a children’s hospital and a kindergarten were among the sites damaged. He renewed appeals for Western partners to supply more Patriot air-defence interceptors, saying shortages were costing lives.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia used Kinzhal and Zircon hypersonic missiles, Iskander and North Korean KN-23 ballistic missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the sea, and Shahed-type drones. Air defences downed 41 of 46 cruise missiles and 145 drones, but ballistic missiles proved harder to intercept.
Massive Russian Strike Causes Widespread Damage in Kyiv:
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces conducted a large overnight strike with precision weapons and long-range drones against “military-industrial and logistics targets” in Kyiv and the surrounding region. It claimed the attacks damaged facilities producing drone and missile components, an ammunition storage site, a logistics centre and a fuel depot. Moscow has repeatedly stated that it does not deliberately target civilians.
Power outages affected tens of thousands of households in parts of the city, though utility companies reported restoring supply to many by Thursday afternoon. Thousands of residents, including children, spent the night in metro stations as air-raid alerts stretched for hours.
The attack comes amid a broader intensification of Russian long-range strikes on Ukrainian cities, which Ukrainian officials link to dwindling stocks of advanced Western interceptors. Zelenskyy warned that without sufficient air defences, Russia will not take peace negotiations seriously.
Rescue workers continued clearing rubble and extinguishing fires into Thursday as the full extent of the damage was assessed. The assault underscores the ongoing vulnerability of Ukrainian urban centres more than four years into the war.
