53-year-old arrested at the scene after 48-year-old woman dies from multiple stab wounds in New South Wales regional town.
A 53-year-old man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a woman inside a residential unit in the northern New South Wales town of Armidale, in what police are treating as a domestic violence incident.
Emergency services were called to a unit complex on Rockvale Road at approximately 2:15am on Thursday. Officers from the New England Police District found a 48-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds. Paramedics treated her at the scene, but she died from her injuries.
Vincent Raymond Blair, 53, was arrested at the location and taken to Armidale Police Station. He was later charged with murder. Police said the pair were known to each other and had been in a de facto relationship, leading investigators to classify the death as a domestic violence-related murder. A knife was seized from the scene for forensic examination.
Armidale Murder Case: Accused Remains in Custody:
Inspector Greg Ryan described the scene as “devastating” for the family of the victim. He confirmed that no children were present at the time of the incident and that both the woman and the accused were known to police. The woman’s family has been notified.
A crime scene was established around the unit complex, and detectives are speaking with other residents and potential witnesses. Blair did not apply for bail and was refused release. He is expected to next appear in court in December, possibly by video link from custody.
Local residents laid flowers near the police cordon early on Thursday morning as the investigation continued.
Australia Highlights Domestic Violence Crisis:
Domestic and family violence remains a significant issue in Australia, particularly in regional areas where access to specialist support services can be limited. Authorities have urged anyone experiencing or witnessing domestic violence to seek help. Support is available through the national service 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) and other local resources.
Police investigations into the exact circumstances of the stabbing are ongoing. The case will proceed through the courts in the coming months.
