Strike hits area amid ongoing cross-border violence as civilian casualties mount.

An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon has killed at least seven rescue workers, according to Lebanese officials and local emergency services, as the fragile situation along the border continues to deteriorate.

The attack targeted a site where civil defence teams were operating, with images from the scene showing rescue workers sifting through rubble and debris in search of survivors or bodies. The strike occurred in a region that has seen repeated Israeli military operations since the escalation of hostilities with Hezbollah.

Lebanese authorities condemned the incident as a “war crime,” accusing Israel of deliberately targeting emergency responders. The Lebanese Red Cross and civil defence units reported that the victims were engaged in humanitarian efforts following previous strikes in the area.

Israeli Strike Raises Fears for Civilians and Rescue Teams:

The latest strike comes as Israel continues its military campaign against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, which it says are necessary to prevent attacks on its northern communities. Hezbollah, for its part, has vowed to respond to what it describes as Israeli aggression.

This incident highlights the growing risks to civilians and humanitarian workers in the conflict zone. Rescue teams in southern Lebanon have repeatedly come under fire while attempting to recover bodies and assist the wounded, raising serious concerns about the protection of medical and civil defence personnel under international humanitarian law.

Rising civilian toll:

Lebanese health officials say the death toll from Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon has climbed steadily, with hundreds of civilians killed since the current round of fighting intensified. The targeting of rescue workers has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organisations.

“These attacks not only kill the immediate victims but also paralyse emergency response capabilities, leaving entire communities vulnerable,” said a spokesperson for a Beirut-based rights group.

Israel has not yet issued a detailed comment on the specific strike, though the Israeli military has previously stated that it takes measures to avoid civilian casualties while accusing Hezbollah of using civilian areas as cover for its operations.

As smoke continues to rise over southern Lebanon and rescue efforts persist under dangerous conditions, fears are growing that the cycle of violence could further escalate, threatening any prospects for a diplomatic resolution.
