Iran claims to shoot down another US MQ-9 Reaper drone

Tehran says air defences downed $30 million unmanned aircraft amid ongoing regional tensions.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for shooting down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone, the latest in a series of reported losses of sophisticated American unmanned aerial vehicles during heightened military activity in the regioN.

According to the IRGC, air defence units detected and destroyed the drone after it allegedly entered Iranian airspace over the Persian Gulf. The statement described the operation as a response to “hostile aircraft” violating Iranian sovereignty. Each MQ-9 Reaper is estimated to cost around $30 million.

Iranian state media released images and footage purporting to show the wreckage of downed drones, though independent verification remains limited. US officials have not immediately confirmed the loss.

Iran Claims Continued MQ-9 Drone Shootdowns:

The incident fits into a broader pattern of Iranian claims of downing multiple MQ-9 Reapers since the outbreak of direct US-Iran military exchanges earlier this year. Reports suggest the US has lost dozens of the drones in operations involving Iran and its allies, representing a significant portion of its inventory and hundreds of millions of dollars in equipment.

The MQ-9 Reaper, a remotely piloted aircraft capable of long-endurance surveillance and precision strikes, has been a cornerstone of US operations in the Middle East. Its repeated losses highlight the growing effectiveness of Iranian air defence systems against unmanned platforms.

Drone and Jet Incidents Fuel Regional Tensions:

The claim comes amid fragile ceasefire efforts and persistent accusations of airspace violations. Iran has also reported firing upon other US assets, including an RQ-4 surveillance drone and an F-35 fighter jet, though those incidents were not confirmed as successful hits.

Washington has not publicly acknowledged the latest downing, consistent with its general policy on operational losses. The Pentagon has previously described such incidents as part of complex air operations in contested airspace.

Human rights and arms control observers warn that the continued use of advanced drones and air defences risks further escalation in an already volatile region. The IRGC has vowed to defend Iranian airspace “with full force” against any perceived threats.
