Mediators hail ‘encouraging progress’ as US and Iranian officials wrap up first round of high-level discussions at Lake Lucerne Summit amid fragile regional truce.
Iran has announced that its high-level delegation has concluded the first round of direct talks with the United States in Switzerland, with both sides agreeing to move into a technical negotiation phase aimed at finalising a comprehensive deal within the 60-day framework.
The talks, held at the luxury Bürgenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne, involved senior Iranian officials including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The US side was led by senior officials, with mediation support from Qatar and Pakistan.
Positive atmosphere despite tensions:
Mediators described the discussions as “positive and constructive,” noting progress on key elements of the earlier Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. Issues discussed included implementation of the ceasefire, sanctions relief, oil exports, and de-escalation in Lebanon.
A joint statement from Qatar and Pakistan confirmed that a roadmap for a final agreement has been established, and specialised technical working groups will now continue negotiations in Switzerland for the remainder of the week.
US-Iran Talks Shift to Technical Stage:
Iranian officials said the technical phase will focus on detailed clauses of the interim deal, including the lifting of US sanctions, unfreezing of assets, and ensuring full compliance with commitments on the Strait of Hormuz and regional issues.
The move to technical talks comes after a tense start influenced by recent statements from US President Donald Trump and ongoing concerns over developments in Lebanon.
Both sides have expressed cautious optimism, while analysts warn that significant differences remain, particularly on Iran’s nuclear programme and long-term security arrangements.
