Independent lawmaker struck twice by vehicle outside her Victoria office; police describe incident as isolated while political leaders condemn rising threats against politicians.

Australian independent Member of Parliament Helen Haines is in critical condition in a Melbourne hospital after losing one leg in what authorities and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have described as a deliberate car attack outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria.

Australian MP Helen Haines Critically Injured in Vehicle Attack:

The 65-year-old MP for the regional seat of Indi was struck by a white Toyota LandCruiser around 3:35pm local time on Monday while she was near the boot of her own car on Murphy Street. Witnesses reported that the driver performed a U-turn, rammed Haines against another vehicle, then reversed and hit her a second time before being detained by bystanders. A knife was later found in the vehicle.

Haines was taken first to a local hospital and then airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where she underwent emergency surgery overnight. Australian media, reported that one of her legs was amputated and that surgeons were working to save the other. On Tuesday, officials described her condition as critical but stable.

A 43-year-old man from the nearby town of Tarrawingee, identified in local media as Brendan Nugent, an environmental campaigner, was arrested at the scene after a local barber and other passers-by intervened and held him until police arrived. He remains in custody. Federal and state police, including counter-terrorism investigators and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), are examining the incident. Potential charges include causing harm to a Commonwealth public official, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Authorities have said the attack appears to be an isolated incident with no known further threats.

Australian Leaders Condemn Deliberate Attack on MP Helen Haines:

Albanese called the incident a “deliberate act” and “not an accident.” “This is a test of our character,” he said, adding that the nation’s thoughts were with Haines, her husband Phil, and her family and community. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke detailed the sequence of the alleged ramming and praised the bystanders who stopped the driver.

Haines, a former nurse, midwife and academic, was first elected as an independent in 2019 and has been widely regarded as a strong advocate for anti-corruption measures and political transparency. She has retained the seat of Indi in subsequent elections. Politicians across the spectrum condemned the attack, noting a documented rise in threats and harassment directed at elected officials in recent years.

The Australian Federal Police stated that the alleged targeting of Haines appeared isolated. Flowers and tributes have been left outside her Wangaratta office as the investigation continues and Haines remains under medical care.
