Stricter scrutiny and higher assessment levels leave Bhutanese students facing major barriers to studying Down Under.
In a significant shift, Australian authorities are rejecting around 70 percent of Bhutanese student visa applications, according to education consultants and recent reports from Bhutan. The sharp rise in refusals over the past six months has sparked concern among aspiring students and education agents in the Himalayan kingdom.
The trend aligns with Australia’s broader crackdown on international student visas, which has pushed overall refusal rates to their highest level in more than two decades. Bhutanese applicants, like many from South Asian countries, are feeling the impact of tougher financial, academic, and genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirements.
Australia Tightens Student Visa Rules, Bhutan Hit Hard:
Australia recently moved Bhutan from Assessment Level 2 to Level 3, meaning stricter documentation-including mandatory English language proficiency scores and detailed financial proof-is now compulsory. Education consultants in Thimphu report that only about three out of every ten applications are succeeding, with many strong-profile candidates also facing rejection.
“Seven out of every 10 applications are now being refused,” one consultant told local media, describing the situation as one of the toughest in recent years.
Australia has been tightening its international education sector to curb migration risks and protect the integrity of its student visa program. Official data from the Department of Home Affairs shows student visa refusal rates climbed to 32.5 percent in February 2026-the highest in over 20 years. Countries such as Nepal (65 percent refusal), Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka have also seen elevated rejection rates.
For Bhutan, the change comes at a time when studying in Australia had become an increasingly popular pathway for young people seeking higher education and better career prospects amid limited opportunities at home.
Australian Student Visa Denials Create Financial Strain:
The high rejection rate is causing disappointment and financial strain for many families who invest heavily in application fees, English tests, and documentation. Some students have reportedly shifted their focus to other destinations in Europe, Canada, or the UK.
Bhutanese officials and the Royal Bhutanese Embassy in Canberra have reminded applicants that visa decisions rest solely with Australian authorities. The embassy does not process or intervene in individual student visa cases.
As Australia continues to recalibrate its immigration settings, Bhutanese students and education agents are calling for clearer communication and support to help genuine applicants navigate the stricter rules.
