23-year-old faces two counts of murder and related charges over blaze in Middlesbrough that left four others injured.
A 23-year-old man has been charged with murder following a house fire in northern England that killed a seven-year-old girl and her aunt.
Natalie McDonald, 34, and her niece Valentina Foster died in the blaze that broke out in the early hours of 26 August at a property on Birchington Avenue in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough. Four other people were injured in the fire.
Cleveland Police said on Tuesday that the 23-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent, and two counts of attempted section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent. He is scheduled to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court later on Tuesday.
Police Call House Fire Tragic as Investigation Continues:
Senior Investigating Officer Katie Smith, from Northumbria Police, described the incident as “truly tragic.”
“This has been a truly tragic incident, and my thoughts remain with the families of all those involved,” she said. “I would like to thank local residents for their support and patience during this complex investigation.”
Smith urged the public to avoid speculation or commentary that could prejudice the legal proceedings.
A 31-year-old man who was also arrested in connection with the case was released without charge on Sunday.
Emergency services were called to the house at 5:23am on 26 August. Firefighters tackled flames coming from upstairs windows. Two teenage girls, including McDonald’s 15-year-old daughter, managed to escape by kicking out an upstairs window and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They have since been discharged from hospital.
Fire Victims Remembered as Police Investigation Continues:
A 48-year-old woman remains in a critical but stable condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, while a 27-year-old man continues to receive treatment at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
Family members have paid tribute to the victims. McDonald’s mother described her daughter as “a beautiful soul, who would have done anything for anybody” and “lovely, bright and bubbly.” Valentina, who had been staying with relatives during the summer holidays, was remembered as a “cute little kid.”
Police have said they are not linking the fire to a separate fatal collision on the nearby A66 motorway that occurred days earlier. Officers continue to appeal for information from anyone who may have details relevant to the investigation. The case remains under active inquiry as the charged man prepares to appear in court.
