Ukrainian leader proposes immediate halt to fighting and face-to-face negotiations as the war enters its fourth year.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin in an open letter, proposing an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire across all front lines and offering direct talks to end Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.
In the letter, Zelensky emphasised the need to stop the bloodshed and address the massive humanitarian suffering caused by the full-scale invasion. He invited Putin to engage in direct negotiations without intermediaries, describing it as a necessary step toward achieving a just and lasting peace.
Kyiv Makes New Diplomatic Overture:
This latest overture represents a notable public gesture from Kyiv amid mounting international pressure for a diplomatic solution. While previous Ukrainian positions stressed the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from occupied territories as a precondition, the open letter appears to focus on an immediate ceasefire as a first step.
The proposal comes as both sides continue to report heavy casualties in eastern Ukraine, with Russian forces pressing advances in Donetsk region and Ukrainian forces conducting long-range strikes deep inside Russia.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022, has devastated Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, displaced millions, and caused hundreds of thousands of military and civilian deaths. Despite substantial Western military and financial support, the war has settled into a grinding war of attrition with limited territorial gains for either side in recent months.
Multiple rounds of peace talks, mediated by countries such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and China, have failed to produce a breakthrough due to fundamental disagreements over territory, security guarantees, and Ukraine’s future alignment with NATO.
Zelensky Urges Path to Peace Talks:
The Kremlin has yet to issue an official response. Russian officials have repeatedly stated that any negotiations must acknowledge the “new realities” on the ground, including Russian control over annexed regions.
Western allies have cautiously welcomed any genuine diplomatic initiative while reiterating support for Ukraine’s sovereignty. European leaders, facing domestic war fatigue and economic pressures, are increasingly urging both sides to explore de-escalation paths.
Analysts view Zelensky’s open letter as both a diplomatic move and a strategic communication effort to demonstrate Ukraine’s openness to talks while shifting responsibility for continued fighting onto Moscow.
