Prominent progressive mayor condemns surge in anti-Muslim violence as community leaders demand federal action and greater protection for mosques across the United States.
New York City Mayor has strongly condemned what he described as a rising wave of Islamophobia in the United States, following a deadly shooting at a mosque in California that left at least one worshipper dead and several others injured.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Muslim community leaders, the mayor called the attack “a horrific act of hate” and urged Americans to confront the increasing normalisation of anti-Muslim rhetoric and violence.

The California mosque shooting occurred during evening prayers when an unidentified gunman opened fire outside the mosque, killing a 42-year-old father of three and wounding three others. Local authorities are investigating the incident as a hate crime.
Muslim advocacy groups say the California attack is part of a broader surge in anti-Muslim incidents across the country. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reported a sharp increase in complaints of harassment, vandalism, and violent attacks on mosques and individuals in recent months.
Community leaders standing with the mayor, including imams and women in hijab, echoed concerns that divisive political rhetoric is emboldening extremists.
“Words matter,” said one community organiser. “When politicians and media outlets continuously demonise Muslims, it creates an environment where attacks like this become more likely.”

California scene showed heavy police and sheriff presence at the site, with tactical units securing the area. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect, but witnesses described the attacker as a lone gunman who fled the scene before being apprehended later.
New York City, home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the United States, has stepped up security around mosques and Islamic centres following the incident. The mayor announced additional funding for community safety programmes and vowed to work closely with Muslim organisations.
While many praised the mayor’s strong stance, some critics argued that framing the issue primarily as “Islamophobia” overlooks broader challenges of integration, extremism within certain communities, and rising crime rates in major cities. However, the mayor’s office dismissed such criticism as deflection from the core issue of protecting religious minorities.
This latest incident comes amid heightened tensions in the United States over issues of immigration, foreign policy in the Middle East, and domestic political polarisation.
