Skin diseases surge in Gaza displacement camps as extreme heat intensifies suffering
Share This:

Overcrowded tents, poor sanitation and soaring temperatures create perfect conditions for outbreaks, health officials and residents warn, amid dire shortages of medicine and clean water.

Skin infections are spreading rapidly among thousands of Palestinians living in makeshift displacement camps across Gaza, with doctors reporting a sharp rise in cases of scabies, impetigo, fungal infections and severe dermatitis as summer heat grips the enclave.

The crisis is compounding the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, where more than 1.9 million people remain displaced, the vast majority crammed into tent cities with limited access to clean water, sanitation facilities or medical care.

Heat, overcrowding and sanitation collapse fuel outbreak:

Aid workers and local health officials say the combination of high temperatures-often exceeding 35°C (95°F)-and extreme overcrowding has turned the camps into breeding grounds for contagious skin conditions.

“Children are the most affected,” said Dr. Amina al-Khalidi, a dermatologist working with a local clinic in a Rafah tent camp. “We are seeing entire families with the same rashes and infections. The heat makes them sweat constantly, and without proper hygiene or clean clothes, the infections spread like wildfire.”

Displaced Palestinians describe waking up with unbearable itching, open sores and secondary infections caused by constant scratching in unsanitary conditions. Many families share a single tent with 10 or more people, sleeping on the ground with limited ability to wash.

A father carrying his young son through one of the camps told media: “Look at his skin-it’s covered in sores. We have no medicine, no soap, nothing. The heat is making everything worse.”

Shortage of Medical Aid Worsens the Crisis:

Gaza’s health system, already devastated after months of conflict, is struggling to cope. Essential medicines for skin conditions, antibiotics and basic ointments are in critically short supply. International aid deliveries remain restricted and inconsistent.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and other agencies have warned of a broader collapse in public health, with waterborne diseases, respiratory infections and now widespread dermatological issues rising in parallel.

Temperatures are expected to climb further in the coming weeks, raising fears of even more severe outbreaks. Without large-scale intervention, including increased water trucking, hygiene kits and medical supplies, health experts say the situation could spiral further.

Rising Health Crisis in Gaza as Conditions Worsen:

The skin disease surge is the latest symptom of a protracted crisis affecting every aspect of life in Gaza. Malnutrition, weakened immune systems from lack of food and repeated displacement have left residents particularly vulnerable.

Palestinian health authorities and human rights groups continue to call for an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian access and the opening of all border crossings to allow sufficient aid into the territory.

As families endure another sweltering summer in tents, the simple act of staying clean has become nearly impossible. For many, the daily struggle is no longer just about survival-but about finding relief from constant, preventable suffering.
