TV Anchor Iqrar ul Hassan Declares Imran Khan’s Era Over, Sets Stage for New Political Party Launch

Prominent journalist calls former PM a ‘boomer’ unfit for Gen Z, unveils plans for a democratic platform to challenge Pakistan’s dynastic politics.

INCIDENT:

In a provocative interview that has ignited fierce debate, Pakistani TV host Iqrar-ul-Hassan has urged imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan to retire from politics, labeling him outdated and too old at 72 to inspire real change. Speaking from London, Hassan announced his own political party launch on January 15, 2026, positioning it as a vehicle for ordinary citizens to break free from family-run parties like PTI, PML-N, and PPP. As PTI supporters decry the move as a ploy to dilute Khan’s influence, Hassan’s entry into politics underscores growing frustrations with Pakistan’s entrenched elite amid ongoing economic woes and rights crackdowns.

FULL STORY:

Iqrar ul Hassan’s foray into politics began with a December 28, 2025, event in London, where he formally announced the creation of a new political party amid chants and disruptions from protesters, many believed to be PTI affiliates. Despite the chaos, Hassan confirmed the party’s official launch on January 15, 2026, along with details on its registration.

In subsequent interviews, including one with Samaa TV on January 5, 2026, Hassan escalated his rhetoric. He described Imran Khan as a “boomer”-a term for someone from an older generation out of touch with modern realities-stating, “Imran Khan has grown old and his time in politics is over.” He argued that Generation Z sees no hope in Khan and that organic leadership must emerge. Hassan emphasized that his party would not be personality-driven; he vowed not to contest elections or hold office, instead creating a platform for common Pakistanis to rise through internal polls.

The timeline traces back to Hassan’s growing criticism of Pakistan’s political system. In July 2025, he posted on X that leaders like Khan, Sharif, and Zardari are “slaves to their own interests.” By October 2025, he urged youth to prepare for a post-Khan era. His December announcement framed the party as a response to failed systems, with January 2026 comments tying it directly to Khan’s alleged irrelevance and PTI’s inability to secure his release from prison.

Hassan clarified in a December 29, 2025, X post that the party is “an effort to create a national political party in Pakistan, run through internal elections. It will not be my party, and I will never take any office in it.” He drew parallels to early MQM but promised greater transparency.

CONTEXT & BACKGROUND:

Iqrar-ul-Hassan, 41, rose to fame through “Sar-e-Aam,” an investigative show exposing corruption and social issues since 2012. His bold stunts, like infiltrating sensitive sites, have earned him millions of followers but also controversies, including a 2022 detention by intelligence officials.

Pakistan’s political landscape is volatile. Imran Khan, ousted in April 2022 via a no-confidence vote, has been jailed since August 2023 on charges including corruption and incitement related to the May 9, 2023, riots. PTI claims these are politically motivated; courts have convicted him in some cases, with appeals ongoing. The February 2024 elections, marred by allegations of rigging, saw PTI-backed independents win seats but unable to form government.

Hassan’s critique taps into widespread disillusionment. Pakistan faces inflation above 20%, youth unemployment at 8.5%, and human rights concerns, per Amnesty International. Dynastic parties dominate: PML-N led by the Sharif family, PPP by Bhuttos/Zardaris, and PTI increasingly centered on Khan despite his imprisonment.
