Trump rejects Iran’s response to US peace proposal as ‘totally unacceptable’

Tensions rise as diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing US-Iran conflict face fresh setback amid concerns over Strait of Hormuz and nuclear issues.

US President Donald Trump has sharply rejected Iran’s official response to a American peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict, describing it as “totally unacceptable”.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump wrote: “I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called ‘Representatives.’ I don’t like it-TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.”

The statement comes as indirect talks, mediated in part by Pakistan, appeared to stall despite a fragile ceasefire that has held unevenly in recent weeks.

Peace talks at a standstill:

Iran had submitted its counter-proposal through Pakistani mediators in recent days. According to Iranian state media and reports, Tehran’s response focused on ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz-a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments-but stopped short of addressing key US demands, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump’s swift dismissal has raised fears that the fragile truce could unravel, with potential implications for regional stability and global energy markets. Oil prices surged following the announcement.

US proposal reportedly included a framework for de-escalation, while leaving more contentious issues such as uranium enrichment for later negotiations. Iran has repeatedly insisted on its right to peaceful nuclear technology and the lifting of sanctions.

US-Iran Ceasefire Under Strain:

The current round of hostilities escalated earlier this year, leading to direct exchanges between US and Iranian forces, including incidents in the Strait of Hormuz that disrupted international shipping. A temporary ceasefire has been in place, but intermittent clashes and accusations from both sides have tested its durability.

Trump has repeatedly warned Tehran of “severe consequences” if a deal is not reached, while Iranian officials have accused Washington of seeking maximum pressure rather than genuine negotiations.

Iran-US Tensions Rise Amid Diplomatic Signals:

Iranian state media defended Tehran’s position, describing the response as “constructive” and accusing the US of undermining diplomacy. Regional analysts suggest neither side appears eager for a full resumption of war, but mutual distrust remains high.

The development comes as Trump is reportedly preparing for high-level discussions, including a planned visit to China, where Iran is expected to feature on the agenda.

As of Monday, May 11, 2026, no immediate new military movements have been reported, but the rhetoric has once again heightened concerns across the Middle East and beyond.
