Trump declares Iran deal in ‘final throes,’ Strait of Hormuz to reopen in days

US President claims negotiations with Iran are nearly complete as the strategic waterway remains a flashpoint in efforts to end the ongoing Middle East conflict.

US President Donald Trump has announced that a deal with Iran is in its “final throes,” with the Strait of Hormuz expected to reopen to international shipping within days.

Speaking as he descended from Air Force One, Trump expressed optimism that a comprehensive agreement to ease tensions and restore maritime traffic through the vital chokepoint is close to completion.

Iran-US Talks Remain Unresolved:

The declaration comes amid indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending months of hostilities that have disrupted global energy markets. Trump has repeatedly stated that the agreement would allow unrestricted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for a significant portion of the world’s oil supply.

“ We are in the final stages. The Strait of Hormuz will be open very soon,” Trump told reporters, adding that the deal would also address broader issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme.

However, Iranian officials have offered more cautious responses, with some sources indicating that while progress has been made, key sticking points-such as the fate of Iran’s highly enriched uranium and the terms of a long-term ceasefire-remain unresolved.

Strait of Hormuz Crisis Near Resolution:

The prolonged restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz have caused sharp increases in global oil prices and shipping costs, affecting economies far beyond the Middle East. Reopening the waterway is seen as essential for stabilising energy markets and reducing inflationary pressures worldwide.

Analysts caution that despite Trump’s upbeat assessment, the situation remains volatile. Previous ceasefire attempts have been strained by mutual accusations of violations, and any final agreement would require approval from both Trump and Iran’s senior leadership.

The US has maintained that Iran must commit to never developing nuclear weapons and ensure free passage through the strait without tolls or interference. Tehran, for its part, has demanded guarantees regarding sanctions relief and security assurances.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the coming days could prove decisive in determining whether the region moves toward de-escalation or faces renewed confrontation.
