A 26-year-old NSW man faces court today charged with allegedly smuggling 20kg of heroin worth $10 million through Sydney Airport from Bangkok. The seizure by Border Force and AFP highlights Australia’s border crackdown on major drug imports.

NSW Man Arrested for $10 Million Heroin Smuggling at Sydney Airport:

A 26-year-old man from New South Wales has been charged with attempting to import a commercial quantity of heroin after authorities allegedly found about 20 kilograms of the drug hidden inside his checked suitcase at Sydney Airport.

The man flew into Sydney from Bangkok, Thailand, on 24 January 2026 and was selected for a routine baggage examination. Australian Border Force officers allegedly located 25 small vacuum-sealed bags, two medium bags and seven large bags-all containing a white powder that tested presumptively positive for heroin.

If the haul had reached Australian streets, authorities estimate it could have been worth $10 million and supplied around 100,000 street-level deals-a stark reminder of the scale of organised crime networks targeting the country’s borders.

Heroin Bust at Sydney Airport: NSW Man Denied Bail:

Australian Border Force officers examined the man’s suitcase after his flight from Bangkok landed at Sydney Airport on 24 January. Inside, they allegedly discovered 25 small, two medium and seven large vacuum-sealed bags filled with a white powder.

Presumptive testing returned a positive result for heroin, with the total estimated weight about 20kg. The Australian Federal Police were called immediately, arrested the man at the airport and seized the packages for forensic analysis.

He was charged that day with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug. He first appeared in NSW Bail Division Court on 24 January, where bail was formally refused. He is scheduled to appear before Downing Centre Local Court today.

Australia Cracks Down on Heroin Smuggling:

Australia maintains some of the world’s strictest border controls on illicit drugs, with the Australian Border Force and Australian Federal Police running continuous joint operations at international airports. Heroin remains a high-priority target because of its devastating impact on communities, including addiction, overdose deaths and associated crime.

Sydney Airport is a frequent entry point for attempted importations from Southeast Asia, where much of the world’s heroin originates. The alleged seizure is part of a pattern of large-scale attempts that authorities say are orchestrated by organised crime syndicates exploiting legitimate international travel routes. Similar operations in recent months have intercepted methamphetamine, cocaine and other border-controlled drugs in luggage.
