Maryland congressman, set to lead Judiciary Committee, says more than a dozen potential impeachable offences exist as midterms approach.
US Representative Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is preparing for the possibility of a third impeachment of President Donald Trump should Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives in the November midterm elections.
Raskin, a constitutional law professor who served as lead manager in Trump’s second impeachment trial, has been campaigning actively for Democratic candidates while laying groundwork for potential investigations and accountability measures. In a recent interview, he stated that “there are certainly more than a dozen impeachable offenses,” citing actions such as launching military operations without congressional authorisation, usurping Congress’s power over federal spending, imposing tariffs he described as improper taxes on foreign goods, directing prosecutions against political opponents, and profiting from cryptocurrency ventures while issuing pardons to convicted fraudsters.
If Democrats win a majority, Raskin is in line to become chairman of the Judiciary Committee, the panel that would play a central role in any impeachment process. He has already been sending letters and introducing resolutions aimed at building a record of inquiry that could support subpoenas and formal probes once his party holds the power of the majority.
Trump Faces Fresh Impeachment Speculation:
Despite his readiness, Raskin has cautioned that impeachment is not a guaranteed or automatic step. “When we contemplate impeachment, we have to be realistic about the Republican Party as an authoritarian cult of personality,” he said. “Democrats in Congress have proven that we are not afraid of impeachment in any way. At the same time, having been through the prior two, we also understand it’s not a panacea.”
In other comments, Raskin has suggested Democrats would prioritise broad investigations into alleged corruption, self-enrichment, the use of presidential pardons, and the handling of federal resources rather than rushing into another impeachment vote. He has argued that Trump might even welcome another impeachment effort as a way to rally his supporters and distract from policy challenges.
Trump, for his part, has repeatedly predicted that Democrats would attempt to impeach him again if they win the midterms. He has also called for Raskin’s expulsion from Congress, describing him in personal terms and claiming the lawmaker would face legal consequences if not for a prior presidential pardon related to the January 6 investigation.
Democrats Target Trump in 2027 Strategy:
Trump was impeached twice during his first term-once in 2019 over dealings with Ukraine and again in 2021 following the Capitol attack-but was acquitted both times by the Senate. A third successful impeachment would still require a two-thirds majority in the Senate for conviction and removal from office, a high bar given the current political divide.
Polls in recent months have shown Democrats competitive or leading in the generic congressional ballot, raising the prospect of a shift in House control in January 2027. Raskin’s preparations form part of a wider Democratic strategy focused on oversight, investigations into Trump family business interests, and efforts to constrain executive power if the party returns to the majority.
