Israeli forces kill Palestinian man as settlers storm Al-Aqsa Mosque compound

Tensions escalate in occupied East Jerusalem as another deadly incident unfolds at one of Islam’s holiest sites.

Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian man on Monday as large numbers of Israeli settlers, protected by security forces, forced their way into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, witnesses and local sources said.

The incident, captured in widely circulated images showing emergency responders carrying an injured or deceased man on a stretcher near the sacred site, has further inflamed tensions in the holy city.

Settlers enter Al-Aqsa under heavy protection:

According to eyewitnesses, dozens of Israeli settlers entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound-the third holiest site in Islam-through multiple gates under the protection of heavily armed Israeli police and soldiers.

Palestinian worshippers reported that Israeli forces restricted Muslim access to the compound while allowing settlers to enter and perform provocative rituals. The images show settlers and visitors gathered on the steps leading to the Dome of the Rock, one of the most iconic symbols of Jerusalem.

The killing of the Palestinian man occurred amid the heightened security operation and settler incursion. Palestinian medical sources identified the victim as a local resident, though his full identity has not yet been officially released.

Palestinian Shot Near Al-Aqsa Compound:

This latest incident comes as part of a broader surge in settler incursions into the Al-Aqsa compound, which Palestinians view as a direct provocation and an attempt to change the fragile status quo of the holy site.

For years, such raids-often coinciding with Jewish holidays or nationalist events-have triggered widespread anger across the occupied Palestinian territories and the wider Muslim world.

The Israeli military has not yet issued a detailed statement on the shooting. In similar past incidents, Israeli authorities have frequently claimed that forces responded to alleged threats or stone-throwing, a justification routinely rejected by Palestinian witnesses and human rights groups.

Al-Aqsa Tensions Draw International Condemnation:

The developments at Al-Aqsa have drawn sharp criticism from several countries and organisations. Jordan, which serves as the custodian of Jerusalem’s holy sites, has repeatedly condemned such incursions as violations of international law and existing agreements.

Human rights organisations have long documented a rising trend of settler violence and Israeli military operations in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, which have resulted in hundreds of Palestinian deaths this year alone.

Al-Aqsa Mosque remains a powerful symbol of Palestinian national and religious identity. Any perceived threat to the site frequently sparks protests and clashes across the region.
