Federal agents search home of US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar weeks before midterms

Critics call raid on Trump opponent an escalation of political intimidation as election looms.

Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) executed a judicially authorised search warrant at the Washington-area residence of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar in the early hours of Monday, October 12, as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, the US Department of Justice confirmed.

The pre-dawn operation, which neighbours reported began with loud knocking around 4:30 a.m., saw multiple agents in HSI jackets surrounding the property and removing boxes of materials. A Justice Department spokesperson stated: “Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.” Officials provided no further public details on the nature of the probe.

Sources familiar with the matter, speaking to multiple US media outlets, said the investigation centres on allegations of immigration fraud related to paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Omar, a Somali-born refugee who arrived in the United States in 1995 at age 12 and became a citizen in 2000, has long faced unsubstantiated claims about her immigration history from right-wing critics.

Ilhan Omar Calls FBI Raid Political Intimidation:

Omar, a progressive Democrat representing Minnesota’s 5th congressional district and a frequent target of President Donald Trump, responded sharply on social media. “I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.”

Her office described the raid as “an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies,” insisting she had “done nothing wrong.”

The timing has drawn particular scrutiny. The search occurred just over three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, in which Omar is seeking a fifth term in a solidly Democratic district. House Democratic leaders, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, condemned the action as “deeply disturbing” and said it “raises serious questions about the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against Donald Trump’s adversaries.”

FBI Raid on Ilhan Omar Fuels Political Intimidation Claims:

Omar has been a consistent critic of Trump since his first presidency, accusing him of racism, Islamophobia, and authoritarian tendencies. Trump and senior figures in his administration, including Vice President JD Vance and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, have repeatedly highlighted questions about her background and immigration status. Trump, when asked about the search, distanced himself while calling Omar “a terrible person” and “very crooked.”

HSI, the criminal investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, led the operation with Justice Department involvement. No charges have been announced, and the supporting affidavit remains sealed. Federal policy traditionally discourages enforcement actions near elections that could create the appearance of political interference, though officials maintain the warrant was properly authorised by a magistrate judge based on probable cause.

The raid marks a rare instance of federal agents searching the home of a sitting member of Congress. It comes amid broader tensions over the use of federal law enforcement under the current administration and intensifies long-running debates about the targeting of political opponents.

Omar’s supporters view the operation as the latest chapter in a sustained campaign against one of the few Muslim women in Congress and a vocal advocate on issues ranging from immigration to foreign policy. Her critics insist the investigation is a legitimate inquiry into potential past fraud. As the midterms approach, the episode is likely to further polarise an already deeply divided American political landscape.
