A Historic Treaty Hits Roadblocks

What was meant to be a milestone in regional security has turned into a controversy. The much-anticipated Australia–PNG Defence Pact, designed to strengthen military cooperation between the two nations, is delayed and raising concerns about national sovereignty.

From Celebration to Suspicion

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and PNG’s James Marape were expected to sign the treaty during PNG’s 50th Independence anniversary. The agreement promised closer defence ties, joint exercises, and a stronger regional security posture. But PNG’s cabinet has withheld approval, signaling unease over the extent of Australia’s influence.

Fears Over Sovereignty

Retired Major General Jerry Singirok has voiced strong opposition, warning that the pact could undermine PNG’s independence. He points to provisions granting foreign forces immunity and the risk of PNG becoming a client state rather than a true partner.

Regional Stakes

Supporters argue that closer cooperation is necessary to counter foreign interference in the Pacific, but the delay itself shows how deeply sovereignty concerns run in PNG. For now, the deal hangs in limbo — and the debate highlights just how delicate regional alliances really are.
