Pakistani troops repel cross-border bid by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan fighters and respond to subsequent firing, according to security sources.
Pakistani security forces have thwarted an attempted infiltration by militants from Afghanistan into the Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with subsequent retaliatory fire forcing Afghan Taliban personnel to abandon several border posts, according to security sources.
The incident occurred on Tuesday along the volatile Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier. Security sources said militants belonging to the group Pakistani authorities refer to as Fitna al-Khawarij-a term used for the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)-tried to cross into Pakistani territory from Afghan posts in Nangarhar and Paktia provinces. Troops deployed along the border detected and repelled the attempt before the militants could enter.
Following the failed infiltration, Afghan Taliban forces opened what Pakistani sources described as unprovoked fire on Pakistani border posts in the Kurram sector, using heavy weapons, mortars and other arms. Pakistani forces responded with small arms, heavy weapons and artillery, targeting Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive locations.
Pakistan Holds Border Positions:
The intensity of the Pakistani response led several Afghan Taliban personnel to abandon their posts and flee, the sources said. Pakistani troops maintained full control of their positions and continued to monitor the border closely, remaining prepared to respond to any further provocation.
The clash comes amid heightened tensions along the roughly 2,600-kilometre Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Islamabad has long accused the Afghan Taliban administration of allowing or failing to prevent TTP and other anti-Pakistan militants from using Afghan soil as a base for attacks inside Pakistan. The TTP, which seeks to overthrow the Pakistani government and impose its interpretation of Islamic law, has carried out numerous attacks in recent years, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Pakistan-Afghan Border Tensions:
Pakistan has reported a significant rise in militant violence since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021. In the days preceding the Kurram incident, Pakistani authorities said they had conducted airstrikes on militant hideouts in the border region, claiming to have killed more than 28 fighters linked to groups responsible for recent attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Kurram, a mountainous district with a complex demographic mix and a history of sectarian and tribal tensions, has repeatedly featured in cross-border incidents. The area’s terrain and proximity to Afghan provinces make it a frequent route for attempted infiltrations and exchanges of fire.
Pakistani officials have repeatedly urged the Afghan interim government to take concrete action against militant groups operating from its territory. Kabul has denied providing sanctuary to the TTP and has accused Pakistan of interference and aggression, including through airstrikes and border fencing that has disrupted traditional cross-border movement.
Security sources emphasised that Pakistani forces remain on high alert and will respond decisively to any further attempts to breach the border or target Pakistani positions. The latest episode underscores the fragile security situation along the frontier and the challenges both sides face in managing a border that has been a source of friction for decades.
