Gulf state intercepts incoming threats amid escalating regional conflict as Iran targets US bases and allies.
Kuwait’s armed forces said their air defence systems were actively engaging hostile missile and drone attacks launched by Iran, as the Gulf nation found itself once again in the crosshairs of the intensifying confrontation between Tehran and the United States.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X early on Thursday, the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces announced that “Kuwaiti air defences are currently engaging hostile missile and drone attacks following the heinous Iranian aggression.” The military clarified that any explosions heard across the country were the result of interception operations and urged citizens and residents to strictly follow safety and security instructions issued by the competent authorities.
Iran Strikes US Bases in Kuwait, Escalating Regional Tensions:
Iranian state media confirmed that Tehran had targeted US military bases in Kuwait “in response to America’s crimes against the Iranian people.” The Islamic Republic’s IRIB news agency reported that one American base had been struck, with claims of smoke rising from the site. Neither Kuwaiti nor US officials immediately confirmed those specific claims of impact.
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attacks, describing them as a blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty and a direct threat to its security and stability. The ministry said the strikes targeted several sites, including a residential complex, and constituted a breach of international law, the UN Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions. It warned that the escalation risks further destabilising the region and undermining diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation.
Firefighting teams from the Kuwait Fire Force responded to a blaze at a residential complex in the capital area after it was hit by a hostile drone. Officials reported that the fire was brought under control, with only material damage and no injuries recorded in that incident. Authorities continued to assess any additional effects from falling debris caused by the interceptions.
Iranian Attacks Escalate Across the Middle East:
The latest wave of attacks forms part of a broader pattern of Iranian retaliation against US military positions and allies across the Middle East. In recent days, Iran has directed missiles and drones toward facilities in Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Iraq’s Kurdistan region, following extensive US strikes on Iranian targets. Kuwait, which hosts significant American forces, has faced repeated aerial assaults since the conflict escalated earlier this year.
Kuwaiti officials have repeatedly held Iran fully responsible for the attacks and reaffirmed the country’s right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security and the safety of its people and residents in accordance with international law. The military continues to operate its layered air defence network, which has intercepted numerous ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones over the course of the hostilities.
As sirens and the sound of interceptors echoed in parts of the country, authorities called on the public to rely solely on official sources for information and avoid approaching any debris or suspicious objects. The situation remained fluid as regional tensions continued to rise.
