Philippine authorities have thwarted a major drug smuggling attempt from Afghanistan, seizing approximately 43 kilograms of methamphetamine hydrochloride with an estimated street value of $5.1 million at the Manila International Container Port.
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) carried out the joint operation after risk profiling flagged two 20-foot shipping containers as high-risk. The containers had been declared as carrying talc stones. During a full physical examination, officers discovered the illicit cargo concealed inside fabric pouches coated with a plaster-of-Paris-like material designed to blend with the legitimate contents.
Philippines Seizes Afghanistan-Linked Meth Shipment:
Laboratory tests later confirmed the substance as methamphetamine hydrochloride, known locally as shabu. Officials presented the haul publicly, with Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno emphasising that strict risk management and monitoring of recurring smuggling patterns were decisive in the interception.
Authorities noted clear similarities with an earlier Afghanistan-linked shipment intercepted at the same port in February 2026. That consignment, declared as marble, had yielded about 40 to 41 kilograms of methamphetamine valued at roughly $4.8 million to $5 million. Both cases point to evolving concealment techniques used by international trafficking networks seeking to move synthetic drugs through Southeast Asian ports.
Methamphetamine remains one of the most widely abused drugs in the Philippines, contributing to significant public health and security challenges. The country has long been a key destination and transit point for transnational drug flows. Shipments originating from Afghanistan, a major producer of opium and increasingly linked to synthetic drug production and trafficking routes, have previously drawn attention from regional law enforcement.
Philippine Authorities Step Up Anti-Drug Efforts:
The latest seizure forms part of intensified border controls by the BOC and PDEA. Officials said enhanced intelligence sharing, non-intrusive inspections, K9 units and targeted profiling of high-risk cargo continue to disrupt attempts to smuggle narcotics into the country. Nepomuceno stressed that the successful interception demonstrates the value of vigilant monitoring and inter-agency coordination in protecting Philippine borders.
No arrests were immediately reported in connection with the August seizure, and investigations into the wider trafficking network are ongoing. The drugs will be subject to further forensic examination and eventual destruction under standard procedures.
The operation underscores the persistent efforts of international criminal groups to exploit commercial shipping routes and the determination of Philippine authorities to intercept such consignments before they reach local markets.
