A young schoolteacher remains in critical condition after she accidentally consumed a corrosive acid from what appeared to be a sealed bottle of drinking water while shopping at a jewellery store in this western Uttar Pradesh town.
The incident occurred on Friday evening, July 10, in the Arjun Nagar area on Delhi Road. According to police and eyewitness accounts, 23-year-old Riya, accompanied by her mother, visited a jewellery shop. Feeling thirsty in the summer heat, she requested water. The shop owner sent an employee to a nearby confectionery store to purchase a chilled bottle, which was handed to her as a sealed Bisleri packaged drinking water.
CCTV footage from the scene reportedly captures Riya opening the bottle, taking a sip, and immediately reacting in severe distress. She rushed outside, spitting out the liquid while experiencing intense burning in her mouth and throat. She was quickly taken to a local hospital and later referred to a medical facility in Meerut, where she continues to receive treatment for severe internal burns. Her condition is described as critical.
Shop Owners Under Investigation:
Preliminary investigations suggest the bottle contained toilet-cleaning acid that had been transferred or stored improperly. Police have detained the owner of the confectionery shop from where the bottle was sourced. Authorities recovered additional acid bottles during searches and are examining how the hazardous substance ended up in packaging resembling a branded water bottle.
The jewellery shop owner is also under scrutiny, with reports indicating possible unlicensed handling or sale of cleaning acids. Officials are probing whether this was a case of negligence, accidental mix-up, or deliberate refilling of used water bottles-a practice sometimes reported in informal retail settings across parts of India.
Riya’s family has expressed shock and demanded a thorough investigation and justice. “She went for something as simple as buying jewellery and this happened,” a relative told local media.
