AI’s Thirst: Data Centres Use Millions of Gallons of Drinking Water Daily for Cooling

The explosive growth of artificial intelligence is placing unprecedented pressure on global freshwater resources, as massive data centres consume vast quantities of water to keep powerful servers from overheating.

As artificial intelligence transforms industries and daily life, a hidden environmental cost is emerging: the enormous volumes of water required to cool the data centres powering AI systems.

An average large-scale AI data centre uses between 1 to 5 million gallons (approximately 3.8 to 19 million litres) of water every single day primarily for evaporative cooling systems that prevent servers from overheating during intensive computations.

A single massive 100-megawatt hyperscale facility can consume upwards of 2.5 billion litres of water annually-roughly equivalent to the total yearly water consumption of 80,000 people.

Putting pressure on already limited community resources:

This intensive water usage has raised serious concerns among environmentalists and local communities, particularly in regions already facing water stress or drought. Many data centres draw from the same freshwater sources used for drinking water, agriculture, and sanitation.

“AI is no longer just an energy problem-it is becoming a major water problem,” said one environmental researcher. The cooling process often involves evaporating water into the atmosphere, meaning much of it is permanently removed from local water cycles.

AI Cooling Methods Under Scrutiny:

Major technology companies are racing to build thousands of new data centres worldwide to train and run increasingly sophisticated AI models. This surge in demand has accelerated construction, especially in the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

While some companies are experimenting with more water-efficient cooling technologies-such as direct liquid cooling, air cooling, or recycling wastewater-the majority of existing large facilities still rely heavily on traditional water-intensive methods.

Growing calls for accountability:

Environmental groups and water rights advocates are urging governments to impose stricter regulations on data centre water usage, including mandatory reporting, usage caps in water-scarce areas, and incentives for sustainable cooling solutions.

As societies increasingly rely on AI for everything from healthcare to transportation, the question remains: How much of our precious freshwater are we willing to allocate to keep these digital systems running?
