British households hold steady but pessimistic outlook as younger adults grow more worried about finances and the broader economy, signalling limited spending appetite ahead of tougher times.
British consumer confidence remained subdued in June, holding steady at-23 on the GfK Consumer Confidence Index, the same level as in May and slightly better than economists’ expectations of a dip to -24.
The long-running survey, conducted by GfK in partnership with the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions (NIM), points to persistent caution among UK households despite some stability in headline figures. Younger consumers, in particular, showed increased pessimism about their personal financial situations and the general economic outlook.
Underlying weakness beneath the surface:
While the overall index showed no change, GfK Consumer Insights Director Neil Bellamy noted that the flat reading masks emerging signs of weakening sentiment. Many households continue to dip into savings to cover everyday expenses amid elevated living costs, with the savings measure dropping sharply in recent months.
Intentions to make major purchases also edged lower, reflecting reluctance to commit to big-ticket spending, especially among lower-income groups. This subdued mood comes against a backdrop of political uncertainty, sticky inflation in certain areas, and global economic pressures.

Consumer spending is a key driver of the UK economy, and prolonged caution could weigh on retail and overall growth. The findings align with other indicators showing resilience in some sectors but limited momentum in household demand.
Analysts suggest that without clear improvements in real wages, energy costs, or fiscal policy clarity, consumers are likely to remain guarded. The Bank of England’s monetary policy decisions in the coming months will be closely watched for their impact on borrowing costs and household finances.
