Passenger Returning from United Arab Emirates Detained After Banned Hookah Products Discovered.

Pakistani customs officials at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore have seized approximately two kilograms of sheesha (hookah) flavours from a passenger arriving from the United Arab Emirates, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred on April 22 when a Pakistani national, identified in reports as Hafiz Asad, was stopped during routine baggage screening. Officials discovered the colourful, packaged sheesha flavours concealed in his luggage. The items are banned from import into Pakistan due to health regulations and restrictions on tobacco-related products.

Health and regulatory concerns:

Pakistan Customs described the seizure as part of ongoing efforts to curb the entry of prohibited substances. According to officials, the two kilograms of flavours could be used for around 200 smoking sessions, highlighting the potential public health impact.

Sheesha products, often flavoured and marketed as a social smoking alternative, have faced increasing scrutiny globally due to links with nicotine addiction, respiratory issues, and other health risks, particularly among younger users.

Passenger reaction:

The passenger widely shared on social media shows him becoming agitated during the inspection, while customs officials remained composed, explaining the regulations and carrying out the confiscation.

The footage has sparked online debate, with some users criticising the passenger’s behaviour and others questioning how the situation was handled. Pakistan Customs has rejected allegations of overreach, maintaining that the action was conducted in line with standard procedures for prohibited imports.

Strict Import Controls and Enforcement Measures:

The seizure underscores Pakistan’s strict import controls on tobacco and related products, which are enforced to protect public health and prevent tax evasion. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, as authorities at major entry points like Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad airports remain vigilant against smuggling attempts.

No formal charges against the passenger have been detailed in public statements so far, though customs officials have reiterated their call for travellers to comply with import laws when returning from abroad.
