Iraq PM Selection Deadlock Deepens Amid U.S. and Iran Power Struggle
Share This:

Political deadlock deepens as rival foreign influences shape Iraq’s stalled government formation.

Iraq’s prolonged political stalemate has intensified into a wider geopolitical contest, as the race to select a new prime minister becomes increasingly shaped by competing U.S. and Iranian influence.

With the ruling Shia-led bloc still unable to reach consensus, Baghdad finds itself at the center of a high-stakes power struggle that could define the country’s political direction for years to come.

Shia Alliance Impasse Slows Down Government Talks:

The political impasse within Iraq’s dominant Shia political alliance continues to block agreement on a consensus candidate for prime minister, leaving the country without a fully functioning government months after elections.

Internal divisions between rival factions have slowed negotiations, as competing leaders struggle to consolidate support within the Coordination Framework, the largest parliamentary bloc.

While caretaker arrangements remain in place, the inability to finalize a nominee has deepened public frustration and raised concerns over governance, economic management, and security oversight.

Analysts say the prolonged delay reflects not only internal rivalry but also the difficulty of balancing Iraq’s fragile political system with external pressures.

Baghdad Navigates Competing Pressure from Washington and Tehran:

As domestic negotiations stall, Iraq has increasingly become a stage for strategic competition between the United States and Iran, both of whom maintain significant political and security influence inside the country.

Washington is widely seen as opposing candidates aligned too closely with Tehran, while Iran continues to support allied factions within Iraq’s Shia political landscape.

This external involvement has further complicated efforts to reach a consensus, with each side accused of backing different political figures and shaping coalition dynamics behind the scenes.

The result is a fragile and contested political environment in Baghdad, where Iraq’s leadership selection is increasingly viewed through the lens of regional power rivalry rather than purely domestic decision-making.
