US Faces Mounting Domestic and International Backlash Over Iran War Strategy
Share This:

US confronts rising protests outside the White House and sharp criticism from allies over its Iran war strategy as oil prices surge and the conflict risks spiralling further.

Protests Swell and Allies Pull Away as US Iran Strategy Faces Fire:

Thousands of anti-war demonstrators converged on the White House on Sunday, waving signs reading “No Bombs on Iran” and “Stop the War on Iran” while chanting against US escalation, as President Donald Trump’s administration confronts its sharpest domestic and international criticism yet over its handling of the three-week-old Iran war. The rallies, organised by coalitions including the ANSWER Coalition and CodePink, reflect growing public anger over soaring fuel prices, the risk of a wider regional catastrophe and the absence of a clear exit strategy.

The backlash comes as European leaders openly distance themselves from US operations aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz and legal scholars accuse the campaign of violating international law, underscoring how the conflict is testing America’s alliances and domestic support at a critical moment.

From Targeted Strikes to Full-Scale War and Rallying Cries:

The demonstrations mark a significant uptick in public opposition since the conflict began on 28 February with joint US-Israeli pre-emptive strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. What started as targeted operations against nuclear sites has escalated into a grinding war involving energy infrastructure, Iranian missile strikes near Israel’s Dimona nuclear facility and the effective paralysis of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Protesters cited recent developments-including Iran’s vow to permanently close the waterway if power plants are hit-as evidence that Trump’s strategy is spiralling out of control. One speaker at the White House rally told the crowd: “This is not our war. We will not pay for it with our taxes, our soldiers or our futures.”

Casualties Mount, Polls Sour, and Allies Pull Back:

The 2026 Iran war has already claimed more than 1,400 lives, displaced hundreds of thousands and driven oil prices up nearly 47 per cent. Iran’s retaliation has shifted from Gulf refineries to direct strikes on Israeli soil, while Trump’s administration has secured limited basing rights from Britain for potential further operations.

Public opposition has grown rapidly. Recent polls show nearly six in ten Americans disapprove of the strikes, with many citing the lack of congressional authorisation and unclear long-term goals. Internationally, the US faces isolation. Germany’s Defence Minister stated bluntly that “this is not our war,” while other European nations have refused to join Hormuz security operations despite US requests.
