Bangladesh-Pakistan Air Link Restored After 14 Years, Opening Doors for Travel and Trade:

After more than a decade of suspended air links, Bangladesh and Pakistan have reconnected their skies with the arrival of Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ first direct flight to Karachi on January 29, 2026. This resumption, following a 14-year pause due to strained relations, signals a potential thaw in bilateral ties, facilitating easier travel for thousands and opening avenues for economic collaboration amid shifting regional dynamics. As passengers disembark with stories of family reunions, experts see this as a step toward mending historical rifts.

Biman Bangladesh Relaunches Dhaka-Karachi Flights, Reuniting Families and Boosting Travel Ties:

The long-awaited reconnection began with Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG341 taking off from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:00 p.m. on January 29, 2026. The Boeing 737-800, carrying around 150 passengers, touched down at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport just after 11:00 p.m., where it received a ceremonial water cannon salute from airport authorities.

Passengers included families reuniting after years, business travelers eyeing new opportunities, and students pursuing educational exchanges. One traveler described the flight as a bridge to relatives in Pakistan, highlighting the personal impact of the resumed service.

The return leg, BG342, departed Karachi shortly after midnight on January 30, marking the full cycle of the inaugural operations. Biman has scheduled the flights for Thursdays and Saturdays, with fares starting at around 45,000 Bangladeshi taka (approximately $380) for a round trip.

This resumption ends a suspension that dates back to 2012, when direct flights were halted amid diplomatic tensions and security issues. Prior to that, services operated sporadically, but the current relaunch comes on the heels of diplomatic engagements following Bangladesh’s political transition.

Shifting Diplomacy and Economic Opportunity Drive Revival of Bangladesh-Pakistan Flights:

Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have been complex since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, following a war that led to the separation from what was then East Pakistan. Strains persisted under former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration, which maintained close ties with India and viewed Pakistan with suspicion.

The turning point came in August 2024, when mass protests in Bangladesh ousted Hasina’s government, paving the way for an interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. This shift facilitated warmer engagements with Pakistan, including high-level visits and agreements on trade and aviation.

Direct flights were a key agenda item in recent bilateral talks. In November 2025, Bangladesh’s Civil Aviation Authority granted Biman permission to resume the route, followed by Pakistan’s approval in December. The move aligns with broader efforts to enhance connectivity in South Asia, where air travel has often been hampered by geopolitics.

Economically, the flights could boost trade, which stood at $800 million in 2025 but has potential for growth in textiles, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.  Culturally and educationally, they enable easier access for Bangladeshi students to Pakistani institutions and vice versa, fostering people-to-people ties.
